FAQ
I have heard that CSLI can be life-changing; what does that mean?
Most people come out of the CSLI experience with a clear understanding of who they are and how they show up as a leader. Much of the program is meant to help you better understand your role and how you affect those in your sphere of influence. Sometimes that means that you will have a revelation about yourself that can be life-changing. The CSLI experience also creates an opportunity for the people in each class to bond deeply with one another through shared experiences and new understanding. The class time involves several hours with a leadership coach, specially assigned to you. Many people find great and lasting value in the coaching experience.
How are candidates chosen?
Candidates are chosen from a competitive selection process, which begins with being nominated to apply by an alum and then submitting your application. Each candidate is selected by a committee based on the application, cover letter, reference letters, the economic sector they represent (e.g., business, non-profit, government, education, healthcare), and past and current involvement in the community.
What qualifications does CSLI look for in a candidate?
We seek established leaders who have the capacity and commitment to positively impact our community. Candidates should have demonstrated community involvement and a strong commitment to become involved in community organizations or initiatives.
Do you accept more than one candidate from a particular organization?
Dozens of applications typically are received each year for 16 spots in the program. For that reason, CSLI cannot accept more than one candidate from an organization.
Do you give special consideration to individuals who have previously applied to the program?
Individuals who apply and are not selected can ask to be considered again in future years, though repeat applications do not guarantee selection. You may want to indicate in your cover letter that you have applied in the past. With a limited number of individuals per class year, many candidates apply more than once.
What happens if I am not selected?
If not selected for this year’s class, you must be nominated by a CSLI graduate again next year. You can be nominated by the same person multiple times.
Is there a commitment after I graduate from the program?
Yes. CSLI succeeds because of the alumni who volunteer each year to help sustain CSLI through several volunteer committees and who actively participate in other community organizations and initiatives. Commitment also includes attending programs, special events, and opportunities for sponsorship, along with a financial commitment for annual dues support.
I have physical limitations. How strenuous is the week-long session of the CSLI program?
Applicants are encouraged to apply regardless of physical limitations. Class members are invited to participate in CSLI and follow-on events that may involve physical exertion. However, whether and at what level you choose to participate in these activities is a personal choice. Over the years, individuals of all abilities have participated in CSLI activities. We will gladly address any concern you have regarding CSLI, and we will do what we can to help you participate at whatever physical level you choose.
How much does the program cost?
Tuition is $4,345.00. Most applicants’ employers pay this fee. Limited scholarships are available to non-profits and individuals not associated with an organization. On average, 2 or 3 participants a year receive a scholarship. These generally range from $500 to $1,000. The maximum scholarship is 50% of tuition.
What is the schedule?
The CSLI program will occur in April. Selections are announced during the previous Fall/Winter. Full payment is due by the 1st Friday in February. Dates: Orientation is usually a half day in February and the class is a weeklong in April.
